We also asked “Any final thoughts on family days out?” Comments from parents included:

“Family days out can spiral and cost a huge amount of money so we normally do something like a walk and ice-cream/sweet treat every weekend and then every 2-3 months it’s a big day out that is planned and extra special, like the zoo or Tayto park or something else like that.”

“It’s hard to get a day out that appeals to everyone as my kids are 14, 8 and 2.”

“Always looking for places that are accessible by public transport. We look for spots with safe swimming spots, parking spaces and toilets near by.”

“Love a family day out. With two kids at different stages, one being a teenager I love to find days out they both get something from it ..also walks mountains etc and local attractions.”

“I love family days out with my children as it takes them off the internet for a couple of hours and let them see what’s going on around them outside in the fresh air and not in their bedrooms on iPads.”

“Anything that provides a good amount of time out, something that takes 4 or 5 hours and makes us feel we’ve value for money.

Actionable Insights for the Irish Tourism Industry

  • Cost is a consideration for parents, especially given recent inflation. Consider offering bundle tickets for e.g. 2 families to visit to help attract more footfall and keep the price down for customers.
  • Parents told us having multiple food and drink options is attractive to them on a day out, from good coffee to outdoor eating. If you offer more than just a café be sure to tell everyone on your website, email and social media.
