While everyone in Ireland is entitled to medical treatment, the reality is that the public health system is stretched and there are long waits for specialist services. Many families opt for private health cover.

In 2019, according to The Health Insurance Authority, 45% of the population (2.2M) have private health insurance. the average amount paid for a premium for in-patient cover was €1,210 in 2018. So for families that opt for this cover, it can be a significant cost for the year.

“I have a GP visit card so don’t really need it, but if I did then the market for it is quite confusing and I would have no idea where to start or what type of policy I would need.”
