We asked our Insights panel of parents to tell us how far they would be willing to travel to go on a day out with the kids to visit a particular venue or attraction. Here’s how they answered:

We also asked Where is your favourite family day out attraction/venue in Ireland and why? Comments from our panel members included:

“We love going to the Zoo, it has improved so much since we were children. The animals all have such great space and look healthy and happy. Our favourite enclosure are the penguins and we usually try to be there in time for when they get fed.”

“Fota Wildlife Park because our Dublin Zoo pass means free entry. The roads are big and easy to drive, and there are other things to do and see near Fota e.g. beaches and restaurants.”

“We love Bay Sports in Athlone. Great active fun for everyone. We also love Powerscourt for the gardens and walks and go there when we visit grandparents in Dublin.”

“I love Lough Key Forest and Activity Park as it has something for all ages to enjoy. We have especially missed Boda Borg and are looking forward going back for a fun family challenge day out. Lough Key is about 2 hours away from us, but worth the trip. And the Café there is fab too.”

“Bloom. It caters for all ages and interests. Great children’s area. Love the food tastings and live demos. I love gardening so the show gardens are a great inspiration. Better than Chelsea. It’s well organised and a beautiful way to spend a summer’s day in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.”

Actionable Insights for Days Out Venues

  • Cost is a consideration for parents, especially given recent inflation. Consider offering bundle tickets for e.g. 2 families to visit to help attract more footfall and keep the price down for customers.
  • Parents told us having multiple food and drink options is attractive to them on a day out, from good coffee to outdoor eating. If you offer more than just a café be sure to tell everyone on your website, email and social media.
  • Our complete insights report on Family Days Out will be out shortly. Find out more about what parents want from family days out to help you plan!
